N1805 / 45899 was destined for Pan American Grace but the option of this airframe was not taken up and was delivered to Braniff on September 29 1967 In 1972 and advertising executive George Gordon had an idea to paint a real size aircraft and as a tribute to Alexander Calder and his mobiles and was asked to undertake this work. George Gordon flew to Sache in France with a model aircraft and over lunch he approached Calder and asked if he would paint a plane? The reply was that he did not paint toys and then it was explained that this would be a real size aircraft. Calder agreed to this and was introduced to Harding Lawrence in 1972 and then the relationship between Braniff and Calder was formed until his untimely death in 1976. N1805 was one of two aircraft which Calder painted with a third planned which was never finished. The DC-8-62 flew with two different designs of engines this model representing the first design. The original model from Inflight had the engines painted when Calder repainted to engines at the Paris Air Show in 1975.
